The ultra steep spectrum survey

The study of high redshift radio galaxies has been boosted for the last years due to new techniques and new technologies. Using the ultra steep radio spectrum as a selection criterion has been shown (Chambers et al., 1987) to be an efficient technique for locating very distant radio galaxies. Based on this selection criterion, Chambers et al. began a multi-spectral investigation with the most sensitive instruments available to observe the ultra steep spectrum radio source sample of Tielens et al. (1978). They found lots of distant radio galaxies including 4C41.17, the most distant galaxy currently known, at a redshift of (Chambers, 1989). These galaxies are different in many respects. All these sources are for instance strong Lyman emitters.
